West Indies Narrowly Miss Out on Record Pursuit Against New Zealand

0

West Indies pulled off an incredible escape to draw their first Test against New Zealand, thanks to a remarkable double century from Justin Greaves.

Greaves scored an unbeaten 202 — the best score of his Test career — as the West Indies made 457-6, the second-highest fourth-innings total ever recorded in Test cricket.

This came after they were bowled out for only 167 earlier in the match and were set a massive target of 531, far more than any team has ever successfully chased. But instead of collapsing, they batted bravely for almost two full days.

Greaves soaked up 388 balls and batted for more than nine hours. He built a crucial 180-run partnership with Kemar Roach, who hit a career-best 58 and survived 233 balls. Their stand forced New Zealand captain Tom Latham to accept a draw late on day five.

Greaves also added 196 runs with Shai Hope, who made 140, earlier in the innings.

New Zealand’s bowlers struggled, partly due to injuries to Matt Henry and Nathan Smith. Jacob Duffy finished with 3-122 and eight wickets in the match.

The second Test begins on 9 December in Wellington.
