Tanzania and Tunisia qualify for the Afcon last 16 after a draw

0

Tanzania came from behind to draw with Tunisia in Group C at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that sent both teams into the last 16.

Tunisia, Afcon champions in 2004, only needed a draw to finish second behind Nigeria. Tanzania also progressed, qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams and edging out Angola on goals scored.

Tunisia took the lead just before half-time when Ismael Gharbi scored from the penalty spot after a VAR review judged that Ibrahim Hamad had fouled Hazem Mastouri in the box.

Tanzania responded early in the second half, with Feisal Salum equalising through a long-range shot that crept inside the post. Neither side created many clear chances after that, although Tanzania’s Simon Msuva went close with a header from a corner.

The draw means Tanzania reach the Afcon knockout stage for the first time and become the first team to do so with just two points since the tournament expanded to 24 teams. Tunisia will face Mali next, while Tanzania will take on host nation Morocco.
