Nigeria top Afcon group as 10-man Uganda are forced to use three Goalkeepers

A much-changed Nigeria side finished the Afcon group stage with a 100% record, beating and knocking out Uganda, who were reduced to 10 men and forced to use all three of their goalkeepers.

Already confirmed as Group C winners, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle rested several regular starters and handed Victor Osimhen the captain’s armband. Nigeria went ahead in the 28th minute through Paul Onuachu in an evenly balanced first half.

Uganda’s problems grew when first-choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango picked up an injury and had to be replaced at half-time. His replacement, Salim Magoola, was then sent off for handling the ball outside the box, meaning third-choice keeper Nafian Alionzi had to come on.

Nigeria took full advantage, with Raphael Onyedika scoring twice in quick succession to make it 3-0. Uganda pulled one goal back late on through Rogers Mato, but it was not enough to avoid elimination.

Nigeria stay in Fes and will play the third-placed team from Group F next, while Uganda leave the tournament and extend their winless Afcon run to six matches.
