Senegal won Group D at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on goal difference after a tense 2-0 win over Benin in Tangier, despite playing with 10 men.
With DR Congo beating Botswana 3-0, Senegal’s top spot looked set to be decided by drawing lots. But Habib Diallo scored their second goal from Sadio Mane’s pass in the 62nd minute, putting Senegal ahead on goals scored. Cherif Ndiaye then converted a 97th-minute penalty to secure first place.
Benin, who were already assured of progressing before the game, fell behind when Abdoulaye Seck headed in Krepin Diatta’s cross. They were also reduced to 10 men after Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off.
Senegal will stay in Tangier to face either Burkina Faso or Sudan in the last 16, while Benin will meet seven-time champions Egypt in Agadir.
