DR Congo won their final Group D match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, beating already-eliminated Botswana 3-0, but still had to settle for second place behind Senegal.
The Leopards, already guaranteed a last-16 spot, fell behind Senegal on goal difference going into the final round. Nathanael Mukau opened the scoring after connecting with Gael Kakuta’s backheel, and Kakuta added a penalty 10 minutes later after Meschack Elia’s cross hit a hand. Kakuta then completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute from Theo Bongonda’s cut-back.
A potential fourth goal from Fiston Mayele was ruled out for handball, and Bongonda missed three late chances. Senegal’s 3-0 win over Benin meant DR Congo finished second in the group.
The Leopards will remain in Rabat to face two-time champions Algeria in the last 16 on 6 January.
