Golfer Rory McIlroy has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 after a remarkable season.
The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland completed the career Grand Slam by winning his first Masters title at Augusta in April, becoming the first European to achieve the feat. He had already won the US Open, The Open and the US PGA Championship earlier in his career, but had waited 11 years to finally complete the set.
McIlroy also played a major role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory in the United States, contributing important points to the team. On top of that, he won the Irish Open, the Players Championship, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and claimed his seventh Race to Dubai title.
England rugby star Ellie Kildunne finished second in the voting, with Formula 1 driver Lando Norris third. The winner was decided by a public vote.
McIlroy is only the third golfer to win the award and the third Northern Irish sportsperson to do so. Team Europe were also named Team of the Year following their Ryder Cup success.
