Morgan Rogers scored twice as Aston Villa continued their brilliant form with a win over Manchester United at Villa Park, extending their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions—their best top-flight run since 1914.
Villa were not at their best, but Rogers made the difference. He opened the scoring just before half-time with a curling shot into the corner. After Matheus Cunha equalised for United following a mistake by Matty Cash, Rogers struck again, cutting inside defender Leny Yoro and curling in a similar finish for his sixth league goal in as many games.
Manager Unai Emery celebrated wildly as Villa claimed only their second home Premier League win over United in 27 attempts and moved to within three points of league leaders Arsenal.
It was a miserable day for United boss Ruben Amorim, who lost captain Bruno Fernandes to injury at half-time. Already missing several senior players, United’s problems grew when Fernandes appeared to hurt his hamstring and could not continue after the break. With the squad stretched, youngsters Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey made their debuts, while Cunha missed United’s best chance to equalise by heading wide from close range.
