Goals from Thelo Aasgaard and Emmanuel Fernandez gave Rangers control of the match, although St Mirren pulled one back late on through Mikael Mandron. The visitors also missed a penalty earlier in the game, which could have changed the outcome.
Rangers could have made the win more comfortable after creating several chances, while goalkeeper Jack Butland made important saves to protect the lead.
The victory leaves Rangers within six points of league leaders Hearts and just three behind Celtic, giving them momentum going into the derby at Celtic Park. St Mirren’s defeat was their first in six matches, but it caps off a strong year for the League Cup winners.
