Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes admitted the derby defeat to Sunderland was the most painful loss he has experienced at the club, saying Newcastle “have a better team” but failed to show it on the pitch. He described the performance as embarrassing and said the players let the fans down.
Manager Eddie Howe also apologised to supporters, accepting that the loss would bring heavy criticism because of the importance of the derby. He said the manner of the defeat hurt the most, especially against a newly promoted rival, and admitted Newcastle did not live up to expectations.
