Liverpool manager Gareth Taylor, who is under pressure, says his team has had a “real reality check” after their awful start to the WSL continued with a heavy 3-0 loss to Aston Villa.
Liverpool still haven’t won any of their 10 WSL games and have only four points, and the defeat at Villa Park – where they didn’t manage a single shot on target – leaves them bottom of the table, two points behind the rest.
When asked about the pressure on him, Taylor told Sky Sports he wasn’t sure but admitted, “this team needs help – I need help.”
Taylor joined Liverpool in August after replacing interim boss Amber Whiteley, who had finished seventh last season. But in his five months in charge he has only won three matches, all against WSL 2 teams in the League Cup.
Taylor said the team has clearly gone backwards, which shouldn’t happen at a club like Liverpool. He added that everyone is trying their best, but the problems have been exposed in games like this one.
Liverpool’s struggles have also been made worse by several injuries to key players, including ACL injuries for Marie Hobinger and Sophie Roman Haug, while other experienced players like Ceri Holland and Gemma Bonner have also been sidelined.
