Liverpool and Wolves paid heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield as his former clubs faced each other for the first time since his tragic death in July.

The 28-year-old Portugal forward, who died in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva, was honoured by his family, with his sons Dinis and Duarte joining the matchday mascots and leading Liverpool out of the tunnel. Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, was also present, and a banner reading “Diogo Jota, forever in our hearts” was displayed in the Kop stand. Wolves fans joined in with chants of “Diogo, Diogo, Diogo”, while Liverpool supporters applauded and sang in his memory during the 20th minute.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch dedicated his opener to Jota, recreating the striker’s signature shark-style celebration. Earlier, Wolves players and staff laid wreaths outside Anfield to honour the forward, who scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for the club. Jota netted 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup, EFL Cup (2022), and the Premier League.

Liverpool retired his number 20 shirt, and head coach Arne Slot expressed hope that the widespread affection for Jota would bring his family some comfort during their first Christmas without him.
