Fans became angry during Lionel Messi’s visit to India after feeling disappointed by how little they saw of the football star at an event in Kolkata.
Thousands of supporters paid large sums of money for tickets, hoping to see Messi up close. However, when he appeared briefly at Salt Lake Stadium, he was surrounded by officials and celebrities, making it hard for fans to even see him. After about 20 minutes, security took him away, which upset parts of the crowd.
Some frustrated fans then ripped up seats, stormed the pitch, and threw plastic chairs and water bottles, causing chaos. Many said they had spent a month’s salary just to attend and felt let down by the organisers.
Messi is in India for his “GOAT tour”, which includes promotional events in several cities. He did not play, despite reports that fans were expecting a short exhibition match.
West Bengal’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was shocked by the incident and announced an investigation. One event organiser has been arrested, and officials are looking into possible refunds for ticket buyers.
