Brilliant Lookman goal helps Nigeria beat Tanzania

0

Nigeria began their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Tanzania in wet conditions in Fes.

The Super Eagles took the lead in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi headed home Alex Iwobi’s cross. Nigeria controlled most of the first half and almost scored again, but Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba denied Samuel Chukwueze.

Tanzania equalised early in the second half through Charles M’Mombwa, but Nigeria quickly responded. Former African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman scored a superb goal, shifting the ball onto his left foot and firing into the top corner to seal the victory.

The win gives Nigeria a strong start in Group C as they continue their quest for a fourth Afcon title. The Super Eagles next face Tunisia in Fes, while Tanzania will play Uganda in Rabat.

Nigeria have not won the Afcon since 2013, but after finishing runners-up at the last tournament, the Super Eagles will be hoping this victory sets the tone for success in Morocco.
