Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatà has been named FIFA’s best women’s player of the year for the third year in a row. England boss Sarina Wiegman was also honoured, winning women’s coach of the year for a record fifth time.
BonmatÃ, 27, played a major role for Spain at Euro 2025, where they finished second to England. She was named player of the tournament after impressing throughout the competition.
At club level, Bonmatà helped Barcelona win three domestic trophies and had an outstanding season in Spain’s top league, scoring 12 goals and setting up six more. Barcelona reached the Champions League final but lost to Arsenal.
Despite that defeat, Bonmatà was named the Champions League player of the season by Uefa, contributing nine goals or assists in 11 matches, including a goal against Chelsea in the semi-finals.
Speaking after receiving the FIFA award, Bonmatà said she was grateful and thanked her teammates, coaches and fans for their support.
Earlier this year, she also won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, becoming the first player ever to achieve that feat. She previously won FIFA’s top award after helping Spain win the World Cup in 2023 and after a historic trophy-winning season with Barcelona in 2024.
Arsenal and Spain midfielder Mariona Caldentey and Barcelona forward Alexia Putellas were also shortlisted for this year’s award.
