Bellamy Says Northern Ireland Should not be Underestimated

Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has warned that Northern Ireland should not be underestimated ahead of the World Cup play-offs.

Wales could face Northern Ireland in a play-off final in Cardiff in March, but only if Wales beat Bosnia-Herzegovina at home and Northern Ireland pull off an upset by defeating Italy in their semi-final.

The winners of the play-off final will qualify for next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Although Italy are heavy favourites against Northern Ireland, Bellamy believes people are making a mistake by writing off Michael O’Neill’s side. He said Northern Ireland are comfortable playing without the ball, are well organised and know exactly how they want to play.

Bellamy pointed out that Northern Ireland’s style could cause Italy real problems, especially with the pressure the Italians are under after failing to qualify for the last two World Cups. He said that expectation can make big teams nervous.

Northern Ireland are ranked much lower than Italy and Wales in the world rankings, but earned their play-off place thanks to strong results in the Nations League.

Bellamy praised Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill, saying he is a coach he greatly admires and that his players respond well to him. He also said Northern Ireland are adaptable and comfortable playing in difficult situations, even away from home.

Bellamy believes the match will be far from easy for Italy and warned fans to watch out for a possible surprise result.
