Newcastle manager Howe warns: We can't let squad go stale

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe admits that he must get the balance right with winter signings.

The Magpies do have money to spend, but must also contend with Financial Fair Play regulations, as they seek to bolster their squad.

Howe, whose team are in the top four of the Premier League, may have to sell to buy as well.

Asked about transfers, per Chronicle Live, Howe said: "We are in a very different position to where we were last year. We knew we needed to add good numbers to get through the door to try to lift the group.

"Now we are in a different position, we are also in a different position with FFP to what we were last year. Where we didn't have a legacy of transfer fees, we had a gap there that we could attack. But we are in a different position now."

Howe added: "You have to be very careful when you are in my position that you don't do something that unsettles the group. You also have to be mindful of the fact you don't want a group that is stale.

"Getting that balance right is crucial. I will try to make those decisions. As I have said FFP does play a part in this."
