What Aubameyang did for me – Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal winger, Gabriel Martinelli has revealed how he was treated by former captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when he first arrived at the Emirates.

He said the feeling will ‘stay with him forever’ after the Brazilian moved to north London in 2019.

Aubameyang and Martinelli were team-mates at Arsenal before the Gabon international was punished for disciplinary breach.

The African star was stripped of the captaincy and eventually left the club by mutual consent after Arsenal paid him to leave.

He joined Barcelona in February, where he spent only six months before returning to England this summer by joining Chelsea.

When Martinelli joined Arsenal from Brazil, he could not communicate in English, which meant that the majority of the club could not talk to him.

“I would think ‘Imagine if someone sat next to me and talked to me, what would I say?” He told The Players’ Tribune

According to the Brazilian winger, he would want to say something but was embarrassed because even when his new teammates spoke to him, he could not respond to them.

“I sat down to eat then Auba arrived, I thought ‘now what?’ he added.

“Then he sat down next to me and started talking to me in Spanish. A good guy, I think that moment… I was very nervous.

“Like for him it was something normal, maybe he doesn’t even remember this but for me, Auba coming to talk to you, sitting at the table with you, it was something that will stay with me forever.”
