David de Gea must accept a massive cut on his current wages to remain with Manchester United.
The Daily Star says the Spanish stopper's current £375,000–a-week Old Trafford contract finishes at the end of this campaign. The Reds hierarchy do have an option to keep him for another year and would like to exercise it. Yet they have no intention of doing so on his present salary.
They want to slash De Gea's weekly wages, which make him the second highest earner at the club behind Cristiano Ronaldo, by at least £100,000.
That would save them the best part of £5million annually. So far there have been no talks between United and De Gea's representatives about his future beyond the season.
But the former Atletico Madrid man, 32, is keen to remain at the club he joined in 2011. He made that clear last month ahead of his 500th game. Despite some difficult spells during his time in England, De Gea has persistently defied his critics by bouncing back to his very best.
