United have made a move for their Champions League winning goalkeeper as they seek to make a sporting director appointment.
The Mirror says Van der Sar has been in contact with United and offered a positive response.
Ajax are already lining up a replacement in Danny Blind, a former Ajax player and father to Daley Blind.
Van der Sar's arrival isn't expected to affect the existing staffing structure at Old Trafford.
