Shiho Kuwaki captured the Women's Open title in dramatic fashion, defeating Esther Henseleit in a gripping sudden-death play-off at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
The thrilling finale was packed with tension, brilliance and heartbreak, with the decisive moments unfolding on the iconic 18th hole.
Henseleit forced the play-off with a stunning 45-foot birdie putt to draw level with Kuwaki at five under par, leaving the Japanese golfer anxiously watching from the clubhouse.
Both players escaped with pars on the first extra hole despite taking very different routes, but the contest swung dramatically when they returned to the 18th. Henseleit's tee shot struck a course marshal and ricocheted into a gorse bush, leaving her in trouble. Unable to salvage par, she handed Kuwaki the opportunity to seal victory with a short putt for four.
The win earned Kuwaki the £1.11 million winner's prize and completed a remarkable turnaround just 12 months after she missed the cut at Royal Porthcawl.
"I just can't believe it," said Kuwaki, whose previous five professional victories had all come on the Japanese tour.
"To be on a stage like this is an honour, and every hole I was just focused on one shot at a time. I just tried to enjoy it as much as I could.
"It's an amazing feeling to win again as a Japanese player. I hope, as Team Japan, we can continue to light up the golf world."
