American rookie Jackson Koivun showcased remarkable composure to defeat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three strokes, claiming his first-ever PGA Tour title at the 3M Open on Sunday.
Competing in just his third tournament since turning professional, the 21-year-old surged into a three-shot lead after firing a sensational 10-under-par 61 in Saturday's third round.
Koivun extended his advantage to five shots during Sunday's final round at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota before Scheffler mounted a trademark late charge. The four-time major champion opened the back nine with three consecutive birdies and added two more over his final three holes to card an impressive eight-under 63, briefly closing the gap.
Despite the mounting pressure, Koivun refused to falter. The former world No. 1 amateur responded with a crucial birdie on the 16th hole before signing for a five-under 66 to finish at 25-under-par, sealing a memorable three-shot victory.
"I had some nerves coming down 18," Koivun admitted. "All throughout the crowd I kept hearing, 'Scottie's coming, Scottie's coming.' I just tried to tune that out, trust my game, and keep making good putts down the stretch."
Americans Denny McCarthy, Brian Harman, and Chandler Phillips shared third place at 20-under alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, finishing five shots behind the champion.
Meanwhile, Michael Kim, who made headlines with a stunning 12-under 59 on Friday, eventually settled for a tie for 10th after closing the tournament with rounds of 70 and 69.
