Dan Neil says he is ready to embrace the pressure and expectations that come with playing for Rangers after completing a three-year move from Sunderland.

The 24-year-old midfielder joins the Scottish club on a free transfer after spending eight years with Sunderland, where he rose through the academy ranks. Neil spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship before sealing his move to Ibrox.

Rangers have strengthened their squad this summer under new manager Derek McInnes, adding defenders Ben Godfrey and Ross McCrorie, striker Lawrence Shankland, goalkeeper Ivor Pandur and now Neil.

Describing the transfer as the start of a new chapter, Neil said he is excited by the responsibility that comes with representing Rangers.

"I've spent many years at Sunderland, where the fans expect the team to win every week," he said. "Knowing that results can shape supporters' weekends is something that motivates me.

"I've spoken to people who have played here, and they say Rangers has a very similar environment. That kind of pressure pushes me to give everything every single day, and that's exactly what I want in my career."

Neil made 201 appearances for his boyhood club after progressing through Sunderland's academy, helping the Black Cats climb from League One to the Premier League. However, first-team opportunities became limited after the club secured promotion to the top flight.

Manager Derek McInnes praised his latest signing, describing Neil as a technically accomplished midfielder with strong qualities on and off the ball.

"He is excellent in possession, brings great energy to the team and is capable of contributing goals," McInnes said. "At just 24, he already has valuable experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to Premier League promotion in 2025. He's ambitious, hungry to improve and will be a great addition to our squad."
