Mexico Fans Unable to Rattle England Players

0

Mexico supporters attempted to disrupt England's preparations for their FIFA World Cup last-16 showdown by staging a noisy gathering outside the team's hotel on the eve of the match, but the effort had little effect after police intervened.

Videos shared on social media showed a group of fans chanting, blasting music and setting off fireworks near England's hotel in Mexico City in an apparent attempt to disturb the players' sleep.

However, early indications from the England camp suggested the stunt had minimal impact on the squad.

Police in riot gear were quickly deployed to the area, preventing supporters from getting close to the hotel and moving them further away to restore order.

Security around England's base has been heightened after Ecuador, who were beaten 2-0 by Mexico in the previous round, lodged a formal complaint with FIFA over noisy disturbances outside their hotel before that match. Ecuador alleged that fans using loudspeakers, motorbikes and vehicle horns had disrupted the team's sleep.

Mexico, one of the tournament's co-hosts, face England in the Round of 16 at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Sunday evening local time (01:00 BST on Monday).

Earlier on Saturday, England's players were greeted by a mix of cheers and jeers as they left their hotel for training under the watch of a heavy security presence.

Despite the pre-match antics, England head coach Thomas Tuchel downplayed any concerns over his team's treatment in Mexico, saying their experience had been "nicer" than expected and praising the home supporters for being "friendly and respectful."
