Ireland Edge Wallabies in Nail-Biting Thriller

0

Ireland fought back to claim a dramatic bonus-point victory over Australia after replacement fly-half Ben Donaldson missed a last-gasp penalty in a thrilling Nations Championship clash in Sydney.

With the clock in the red, Donaldson's long-range penalty drifted wide of the posts, denying the Wallabies a first win over Ireland since 2018.

Replacement prop Tom Clarkson proved the match-winner, crossing in the 77th minute to complete Ireland's comeback after Andy Farrell's side had trailed at half-time.

Australia, coached by Joe Schmidt, took a five-point lead into the interval thanks to tries from Dylan Pietsch, Jock Campbell, Josh Canham and Ryan Lonergan.

Ireland responded through Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier and Jamison Gibson-Park before Hugo Keenan secured the visitors' bonus-point try. Tate McDermott kept Australia in contention, but Clarkson's late score ultimately settled the contest.

Ireland looked set to add another try when Dan Sheehan crossed with 20 minutes remaining, only for the effort to be ruled out following a television match official review. Clarkson, however, had the final say as Ireland sealed a hard-earned victory.
