Chelsea have officially confirmed the first signing of the Xabi Alonso era, completing the arrival of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a long-term deal.

The Blues announced on Wednesday that the 21-year-old has signed a seven-year contract after agreeing a deal worth more than £43 million with the Serie A club.

Chelsea had been monitoring Palestra's development closely, particularly during his loan spell at Cagliari last season, where he impressed with his versatility and consistency.

Inter Milan were widely regarded as the favourites to sign the Italy international for much of the summer, with talks ongoing over a potential transfer fee. However, Chelsea moved decisively with an improved offer that convinced Atalanta to sanction the deal.

An agreement on personal terms was reached swiftly, allowing the transfer to be completed without delay.

Palestra becomes Chelsea's first major signing since Alonso took charge, excluding players whose arrivals had already been agreed before the Spaniard's appointment.

Speaking after completing the move, Palestra expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League club.

"Many factors influenced my decision to join Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I'm very excited to get started. I've felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can't wait to meet the fans, my team-mates and the manager.

"We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and a great manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can't wait to compete in the Premier League."

Palestra also paid an emotional tribute to Atalanta, the club where he began his professional career.

"I arrived in Bergamo as a child. Atalanta was more than just a club; it was where I grew both as a footballer and as a person," he wrote on Instagram.
