Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface was the first player to report for the club's pre-season training ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Nigerian forward returned to Germany after spending the off-season in Nigeria following the conclusion of his loan spell at Werder Bremen.
Confirming his early arrival, Leverkusen wrote on their official X account on Thursday: "No time to waste! Na Victor carry first report for training. Welcome back, Boniface."
Boniface underwent routine fitness and medical assessments before linking up with the rest of the squad for the club's pre-season training camp in Blankenhain, near Erfurt, from August 1 to 7.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a remarkable debut season after joining Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023. He scored 21 goals and registered nine assists in 34 appearances, playing a key role as Xabi Alonso's side clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title without suffering a single defeat.
His outstanding performances also earned him four Bundesliga Rookie of the Month awards during the historic campaign.
However, injuries interrupted his momentum the following season, limiting both his availability and impact.
Boniface finished the 2024/25 campaign with 11 goals and one assist in 27 appearances as recurring knee problems continued to affect his form.
His struggles were further compounded by two failed transfer moves—first to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr and later to AC Milan with reports suggesting medical concerns played a significant role in both deals collapsing.
A subsequent loan spell at Werder Bremen also failed to revive his fortunes. Persistent fitness issues and recurring knee injuries restricted the Nigerian international to 11 appearances, during which he failed to find the back of the net.
Despite those setbacks, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes remains optimistic that Boniface can return to his best ahead of the new season.
Leverkusen will open their 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign on August 29 with an away fixture against newly promoted SV Elversberg.
