Zverev one win away from elusive first Grand Slam title

Title favourite Alexander Zverev moved within one win of a long-awaited first Grand Slam title after overcoming what he described as his toughest test of the tournament to reach the French Open final.

The second seed defeated first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Jakub Mensik 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to book his place in a fourth major final and a second at Roland Garros.

Zverev, runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in last year's final, will face Italian 10th seed Flavio Cobolli on Sunday after Cobolli advanced via walkover following Matteo Arnaldi's withdrawal through illness.

Victory would see the 29-year-old become the first German man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Boris Becker at the 1996 Australian Open, while also ending his long wait for a maiden major crown.

However, Zverev faces a tricky challenge, having lost his last six matches against Italian opponents, including a straight-sets defeat to Cobolli in the Munich Open semi-finals earlier this year.
