Qualifier Chwalińska extends dream French Open run

0

Qualifier Maja Chwalińska continued her remarkable French Open run by defeating Anna Kalinskaya to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.

The world number 114 was left visibly stunned after sealing a superb 7–6 (7–3), 6–3 victory over the 22nd seed on a blustery day in Paris.

Chwalińska becomes only the second qualifier in history — after Nadia Podoroska in 2020 — to reach the women’s singles semi-finals at Roland Garros, and just the sixth qualifier in the Open era to achieve the feat at any Grand Slam.

Only one of those qualifiers, Britain’s Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open, has gone on to win the title.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka could now await in the last four, should she overcome Russia’s Diana Shnaider later on Wednesday.

“I honestly don’t know what is going on,” Chwalińska said after the match. “I know I keep repeating myself, but every match here feels kind of crazy for me.”
