Florentino Pérez has promised to make a club-record offer for an unnamed “great player” if he is re-elected as Real Madrid president on Sunday.
The 79-year-old said the bid would be worth around €150m (£130m) for an attacking midfielder, describing it as the biggest transfer fee in the club’s history. He ruled out Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Bayern’s Michael Olise, Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku, and also insisted Erling Haaland is not the target.
Manchester City have since said there is “no chance” of a Haaland transfer and warned of potential legal action over claims made by rival election candidate Enrique Riquelme.
Real Madrid, owned by its members, will see nearly 100,000 voting on Sunday to decide the presidency.
Pérez, who first took charge in 2000 and later returned in 2009, previously led the club’s “Galácticos” era with high-profile signings such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham.
Despite recent struggles and back-to-back trophyless seasons, he has vowed to revive that approach, promising a major signing to “generate excitement” if re-elected.
