Manchester United have taken a major step towards building a new 100,000-capacity stadium after acquiring most of the land required for the project near Old Trafford.
The club have purchased a key 25-acre site close to their current home, covering a triangle of roads between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way, near the car parks behind the Stretford End.
There had been limited visible progress since minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe first outlined plans for a new stadium in March 2025, but discussions over land acquisition have continued behind the scenes.
While the land deal marks a significant milestone, plans, designs and overall costs for the proposed stadium have yet to be finalised. Further negotiations are also expected with existing leaseholders in parts of the affected area.
The development comes on the same day Andy Burnham, a key figure in the Old Trafford regeneration project, stepped down as Greater Manchester Mayor after being sworn in as an MP.
