West Bromwich Albion legend Andy Johnson has urged the club to retain Super Eagles striker Josh Maja, describing him as the most complete forward in the squad amid growing uncertainty over his future.
Maja’s current contract, signed following his move from Bordeaux in the summer of 2023, is due to expire at the end of June, leaving questions over whether the Nigerian forward will remain at The Hawthorns beyond this summer.
Johnson, who enjoyed a successful spell with the Baggies, believes the 27-year-old possesses qualities that make him indispensable to the team.
Speaking to the Express & Star via Football League World, the former striker praised Maja’s technical ability, movement and link-up play.
“Would I like Josh to stay? Of course I would,” Johnson said.
“He links up the play better than anyone at the football club, between the midfield and the strikers. His touch nine times out of ten is sensational; he can flip balls in behind.
“He really does spot it. If he gets a partnership with a winger who stands the ball up for him, he can attack it, and he’ll get goals.”
Maja enjoyed a productive campaign despite injury setbacks, scoring three goals in his final nine appearances of the season. Since arriving from Bordeaux, he has registered 22 goal involvements in 81 appearances across all competitions for West Brom.
With his contract winding down, the club faces an important decision over the future of a player many supporters and former stars believe still has plenty to offer.
