Everton have been ordered to pay Burnley £35m following a Premier League commission ruling over breaches of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The case relates to the 2021–22 season, when Everton were found to have exceeded permitted financial limits over a three-year assessment period. Burnley argued that the breach unfairly affected their Premier League survival and led to their relegation, seeking compensation for related losses.
The tribunal awarded Burnley £26m in damages plus £9m in interest, bringing the total to £35m.
Everton have appealed the decision, insisting they will “robustly and thoroughly” challenge the ruling, which the club described as “fundamentally flawed in both law and fact.” They also warned it could set a “dangerous and unworkable precedent” for English football.
The commission concluded that Burnley’s evidence was more convincing, estimating Everton’s overspend could have translated into a 3.85 to 7.13-point impact, and stated that, on the balance of probabilities, the breach contributed to Burnley’s relegation.
Any compensation payment will not affect Everton’s current PSR calculations.
