Jeremy Doku has left Belgium’s World Cup camp to attend the birth of his first child, saying family takes priority.
The Manchester City winger travelled to England with permission from the national team and was accompanied by a team doctor. Belgium confirmed he will rejoin the squad in Seattle ahead of their next match against New Zealand.
Doku had played 86 minutes in Belgium’s opening draw with Egypt but missed their second game, initially due to illness before it was confirmed he had returned for the birth of his son, Praise.
“I don’t want to miss the birth of my first child,” Doku said, adding that he understands football’s demands but values family above all else.
His decision drew mixed reactions, but several players and football figures backed him, saying such moments should take priority over matches.
Doku is expected back with the squad as Belgium continue their World Cup campaign.
