Elliot Anderson's remarkable rise from a talented schoolboy on Tyneside to an England international and World Cup contender continues when the Three Lions face Ghana in Boston on Tuesday.
So highly regarded was Anderson's ability as a youngster that his teachers once discussed placing a bet on him playing for England. That prediction has now become reality, with head coach Thomas Tuchel describing the 23-year-old midfielder as "the full package".
Anderson remains highly respected in Newcastle despite leaving his boyhood club for Nottingham Forest in a £30m deal in July 2024. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described the sale as "the most reluctant in my career", with the Magpies forced into the move due to concerns over breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Since then, Anderson's stock has soared. He has become an integral part of England's World Cup plans and is now attracting interest from Manchester City, with negotiations continuing after Forest rejected an offer reportedly worth around £120m — a fee that could make him the most expensive player in British football history.
Anderson was also courted by Scotland through his Scottish grandmother and represented the Scots at youth level. He received a senior call-up in 2023 but withdrew through injury before ultimately committing his international future to England.
It marks a remarkable journey for the quiet and humble Geordie who first honed his talent on local playing fields and at the renowned Wallsend Boys' Club, which has also produced football stars including Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and Michael Carrick.
