West Ham Relegated Back to Championship for First Time Since 2011/12

West Ham United’s 14-year stay in the Premier League has come to an end after they were relegated to the Championship on the final day of the season, despite securing a 3-0 victory over Leeds United at the London Stadium.

The Hammers needed both a win and a defeat for Tottenham against Everton to preserve their top-flight status.

For much of the match, nerves were evident in a sluggish performance under sweltering conditions, especially with Spurs leading at half-time in their own fixture.

However, West Ham finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when Taty Castellanos headed in Jarrod Bowen’s corner at the back post. The home side doubled their advantage 11 minutes from time as Bowen produced a composed angled finish into the far corner.

Substitute Callum Wilson added a third in stoppage time to complete the win, but results elsewhere went against them as Everton held firm at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite doing their part, West Ham were unable to escape the drop and will now play Championship football for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

Leeds United, meanwhile, ended their campaign in 14th place, suffering just their first defeat in nine matches.
