Raducanu Knocked Out in French Open First Round

Emma Raducanu’s French Open campaign ended in the opening round after a frustrating defeat to Argentina’s Solana Sierra.

The British number one endured a difficult start, losing the first set 6-0 in just 25 minutes without winning a single game. Sierra broke early and dominated throughout, capitalising on Raducanu’s 15 unforced errors in a one-sided opener.

Raducanu showed resilience in the second set, battling back from a double-break down to force a tie-break after briefly levelling the set at 5-5. However, Sierra held her nerve in the decisive moments to close out a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) victory after one hour and 45 minutes.

The 2021 US Open champion has struggled for consistency in recent seasons, with injuries and illness—including a post-viral setback earlier this year—disrupting her build-up to Roland Garros. Her lack of clay-court preparation was evident after a first-round exit in Strasbourg earlier in the week.

Raducanu will now turn her attention to the upcoming grass-court season, while Sierra advances to face either Jasmine Paolini or Dayana Yastremska in the second round.
