Oleksandr Usyk retained his heavyweight world titles in controversial fashion after securing an 11th-round stoppage victory over Dutch challenger Rico Verhoeven in Egypt.
Despite entering the bout as a heavy underdog and competing in only his second professional boxing match, Verhoeven delivered a surprisingly competitive performance against the experienced Ukrainian champion. The Dutchman applied pressure throughout long stretches of the fight and troubled Usyk with his aggression and physicality in a contest that proved far closer than many expected.
As the championship rounds approached, Verhoeven appeared to be edging ahead on the judges’ scorecards, with the fight officially scored 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 in his favour before the stoppage.
However, Usyk responded late in the fight with a sharp left uppercut in the 11th round that sent Verhoeven to the canvas. Although the Dutch fighter beat the count and appeared willing to continue, the referee stepped in moments later following a brief flurry from Usyk, waving off the contest in a decision that immediately sparked controversy.
Many observers felt the stoppage came too early, believing Verhoeven had shown enough composure to continue despite being under pressure in the closing seconds of the round.
After the fight, Usyk acknowledged the challenge posed by his opponent, saying: “This fight was hard. It was a good fight.”
The dramatic outcome allowed Usyk to retain his heavyweight crowns, but debate surrounding the referee’s intervention is likely to dominate discussion in the aftermath of the bout.
