Federation Square reverses World Cup screening ban

The Victorian government has overturned a controversial ban on public screenings of FIFA World Cup matches at Federation Square in Melbourne, allowing football fans to once again gather at the iconic venue during the tournament. The decision followed widespread criticism from football supporters, former players, and Football Australia after authorities initially cited safety concerns and crowd misconduct from previous tournaments as reasons for the restriction.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan stepped in to reverse the decision, insisting that the World Cup should unite fans rather than keep them apart. She assured supporters that police and security personnel would be deployed during screenings, with authorities adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward disorderly behaviour.

Federation Square has become one of Australia’s most famous football gathering spots since hosting large World Cup crowds from 2006. The venue gained global attention during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when videos of Australian fans celebrating the Socceroos’ run to the round of 16 went viral online.

The original ban by the Melbourne Arts Precinct had sparked backlash across the Australian football community, with critics arguing that the move damaged Melbourne’s reputation as a major sporting and multicultural city. Football Australia welcomed the reversal, describing it as a positive outcome for supporters and the growth of football culture in the country.

Australia are set to face Turkey, Paraguay, and co-hosts the United States in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with fans now expected to return to Federation Square in large numbers to support the Socceroos throughout the tournament.
