Panel says Brobbey should have been sent off against Spurs

A Premier League KMI panel has ruled that Brian Brobbey should have been sent off during Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Tottenham.

The incident happened in the 63rd minute when Brobbey pushed Cristian Romero in a challenge, causing him to collide with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who later suffered a serious knee injury.

Referee Rob Jones gave a foul and a yellow card but did not issue a second booking, despite Brobbey already being on a caution.

The panel voted 3-2 that this was an error, saying the push was “unnecessarily reckless” and should have resulted in a red card, which would have left Spurs playing with 10 men for the final stages.

The ruling adds to scrutiny of the referee’s decisions this season, with multiple missed second-yellow card incidents highlighted in his record.
