Brian McDermott, the new England head coach, has offered Jake Connor a clear path back into the national squad ahead of the Rugby League World Cup later this year.
Connor, who previously won the Man of Steel award, was left out of Shaun Wane’s squad for the Ashes series against Australia, with concerns raised about his form and attitude. However, McDermott has taken a different view, praising the 31-year-old as a “game-breaker” and one of the most talented players available.
The new coach believes the criticism surrounding Connor has been unfair and insists his ability on the pitch is what matters most. He confirmed that Connor is firmly in his plans for the World Cup, which will be held in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.
McDermott, who recently took over the role, also hinted he could stay on as England boss beyond the tournament. His main focus now is preparing a strong squad, and bringing Connor back into the fold could add creativity and experience as England aim to improve on recent results.
