Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended the club's handling of international call-ups after 11 of his players withdrew from duty during the recent FIFA window. Despite concerns, Arteta said Arsenal maintain "a very good relationship" with national teams and communicate clearly about players’ medical conditions.
Several key Gunners pulled out due to injuries sustained during or before the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City. These included William Saliba (ankle), Gabriel (knee), Eberechi Eze (calf), Martin Odegaard (knee), Jurrien Timber (groin), and Leandro Trossard (hip). Additional withdrawals came from England trio Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Spain’s Martin Zubimendi, and Ecuador’s Piero Hincapie.
Arteta stressed that players are eager to represent their countries whenever possible. “Players are desperate to play for their nation. We are fully supportive of that and when we can do it, we do it,” he said.
Looking ahead, Arsenal face FA Cup quarter-final action against Southampton. Arteta confirmed Eze will miss the match, while Odegaard and Timber could return. Madueke is doubtful but not seriously injured. The manager emphasized his priority is fielding the strongest team to compete across all competitions.
