Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno is in intensive care after suffering serious injuries in a collision with a vehicle during a training ride on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Spaniard had recently finished 29th in the Tour of Catalonia and was 14th overall in last year’s Vuelta a España.
Guardeno reportedly lost control of his bicycle after hitting a rock, which caused him to collide with a car. He was airlifted by helicopter to Tauli Hospital in Sabadell, where he is being treated in intensive care and is “awaiting further evaluation,” according to his team, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.
The cyclist’s team expressed their support for Guardeno and his family, wishing him a speedy and full recovery. Following his strong performance at the Vuelta, the promising young rider had been in contention to make his Tour de France debut this year.
