The win lifts Bristol City to 11th, seven points off the top six, while Sheffield United remain 17th after six matches without a victory. Both sides had just one shot on target in the first half, with Sykes’ finish proving decisive.
Sheffield United brought on Gustavo Hamer and Andre Brooks at half-time, creating more chances, but Vitek kept out shots from both players and Patrick Bamford. Bristol City now aim to extend Hodgson’s unbeaten start with a third consecutive win when they travel to QPR, while Sheffield United prepare to face promotion-chasing Hull City.
