Arsenal moved back to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought win over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
Eberechi Eze scored the only goal in the ninth minute, curling a superb effort into the top corner after a short corner routine involving Kai Havertz. That early strike proved enough in a tense match.
Newcastle pushed for an equaliser through chances for William Osula, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, especially after the break, but failed to convert despite late pressure.
The result puts Arsenal three points clear in the title race, although injuries to Havertz and Eze added some concern to an otherwise vital win.
