Sonay Kartal saved a match point to beat Emma Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 at the Indian Wells Open.
The British player took the first set easily but lost the second after taking a medical timeout for a back issue. In the deciding set, Navarro served for the match twice, but Kartal fought back and won the tie-break.
Kartal will now face Madison Keys in the third round.
Elsewhere, defending champion Mirra Andreeva crushed Solana Sierra 6-0, 6-0, while Iga Świątek and Elena Rybakina also advanced to the next round.
