Scotland national football team started their World Cup preparations with a narrow friendly loss to Japan national football team, as substitute Junya Ito scored a late winner.
Scotland, playing their first match since qualifying for the World Cup, couldn’t repeat their earlier strong form. Both teams had chances and hit the woodwork, but Ito scored in the 84th minute with a low shot that beat goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Scott McTominay had Scotland’s best early chance, but his effort was saved by Zion Suzuki. Japan gradually took control, though Scotland improved after the break but failed to score.
Substitutes made an impact late on, with Kaoru Mitoma missing a chance before Ito finally scored to win it. George Hirstalso went close for Scotland.
Next, Scotland will face Ivory Coast, while Japan take on England. Japan remain in strong form, while Scotland are still looking for their first home friendly win since 2016.
