Other English clubs also struggled. Tottenham lost 5-2 to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by Paris Saint-Germain, and Liverpool lost 1-0 to Galatasaray. Arsenal and Newcastle only managed draws against Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona.
Pundit Nedum Onuoha said Man City and Chelsea face a very difficult task to turn things around, with little room for mistakes in the second leg.
