Miami Dolphins to Release Tua Tagovailoa at a Record £74m Cost

Miami Dolphins will release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a move that will cost the team a record $99.2m (£74.2m) in dead salary cap money.

Tagovailoa, 28, has been Miami’s starting quarterback since being selected fifth overall in the NFL Draft in 2020. He signed a four-year contract extension in 2024 worth $212.4m, but the team has decided to move in a new direction after a difficult 2025 season.

The release will set a new NFL record for dead cap money, surpassing the $85m hit taken by the Denver Broncos when they released Russell Wilson in 2024.

Miami are rebuilding after hiring new coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, and have already made major roster changes.
