Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said the stakes are very high after their surprise 2-1 Premier League loss to Wolves on Tuesday.
The defeat left Liverpool in fifth place, which is likely enough to qualify for the Champions League, but the table is very close. They have just a three-point lead over Chelsea, who still have a game in hand against fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Van Dijk added, “Either we get it and we deserve it, or we don’t. Playing for Liverpool always comes with pressure, and it’s up to us and our fans to get the results we need for the Champions League.”
Beyond football, there’s a big financial risk. Missing out on the Champions League could cost the club up to £120m, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, though he noted Liverpool is well-run and could handle the loss better than most.
