
Joey Barton and another man have been charged after an alleged assault near a golf club on Merseyside.
Police said the incident happened on Sunday night near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, where officers found a man with injuries to his face and ribs. The victim is currently in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Barton, 43, and Gary O'Grady, 50, have both been charged with section 18 wounding with intent and are due to appear at Wirral Magistrates' Court.
The former midfielder played for clubs including Manchester City F.C., Newcastle United F.C., Queens Park Rangers F.C.and Burnley F.C. before retiring in 2017 and moving into football management.
